As the world commemorates Earth Day on Saturday, the footprints of human activity are visible across the planet’s surface. The relationship between people and the natural world will have consequences for years to come.

In Iraq, lakes shrivel and dry up as rain fails to fall, weather patterns altered by human-made climate change. In Florida, the opposite problem: too much water clogs roads and neighborhoods, trapping cars and stranding people, with the burning of fossil fuels again partially to blame for erratic conditions.

By her own admission, Kyra Sedgwick is part of Hollywood's Fast Times generation. Born in 1965, the future star of Singles, Phenomenon and The Closer entered the acting game in 1982, the same year that Amy Heckerling's Fast Times at Ridgemont High helped launch a fresh wave of movies that were more sexually frank in their depiction of the love lives of teenagers and twentysomethings. It's only recently that Sedgwick has started to reconsider how that era maybe wasn't as progressive as it seemed at the time.

"I think about how much nudity there was on the part of women then," she tells Yahoo Entertainment. "And when I think about that, I'm just so grateful that women now know they have a voice in that. They can say, 'Hell no,' or 'We don't do that anymore.' I'm all for that evolution."

Sedgwick experienced that evolution firsthand while overseeing a sex scene between young actors Kyle Allen and Alexandra Shipp in her first feature film as a director, Space Oddity. In the film — which is available on most VOD platforms now — Allen plays Alex, a young engineer whose dreams of joining a space mission to colonize Mars take a backseat when he falls for Shipp's idealistic insurance agent, Daisy. When they have sex for the first time, Allen pauses mid-kiss to asks Daisy if what he's doing is OK, a piece of direction that the actors specifically gave to Sedgwick.

"It wasn't in the script," she admits, laughing. "But these two amazing actors told me, 'Consent is sexy.' I was like, 'Really? OK, let's do it.' I thought it was great and I was happy to put it in there. That's definitely something you would never have seen in a million years in Fast Times at Ridgemont High!"

Sedgwick was specifically drawn to Rebecca Banner's Space Oddity script because it captured the mindset of young people today — not just in terms of sex and romance, but also the future of life on Earth. "I am keenly aware of what's going on for kids right now," says the actress and filmmaker, who has two grown children with her husband, Kevin Bacon. (Their daughter, Sosie Bacon,  starred in last year's breakout horror hit Smile.

 The Pentagon released a video of a reported UFO flying at a high rate of speed in the vicinity of Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drones that "showed some really interesting things that everyone thought was truly anomalous."

The object flew over South Asia earlier this year and appeared to have a propulsion trail, but it was later determined to be a "sensor artifact," Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick explained.

It was the second of two videos that the director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) showed lawmakers during the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities hearing on April 19.

The first was an "unresolved" UAP – unidentified anomalous phenomena, which is the government-created word for UFO – in an active conflict zone in the Middle East in 2022.

Kirkpatrick showed an infographic during his presentation with information about the 2023 UFO sighting in South Asia that he said is "resolved."

The Pentagon is tracking more than 650 cases of reported UFOs that are preliminarily categorized into common objects like balloons or airplanes. The ones that don't fit in any of the categories are prioritized by where they were spotted, Kirkpatrick said.

"Are they attached to a national security area? Does [it] show some anomalous phenomenology that's of interest?" he said. 

"If it's just a spherical thing that's just floating around with the wind and has no payload, that's less important than something with a payload on it, and that's less important than something that's maneuvering."

An in-depth report about UFO reportings is expected to be released sometime this summer, possibly in July, Kirkpatrick said.

He opened his presentation by saying there's no definitive evidence of extraterrestrial technology or alien life.

But the number of UAP reports has increased over the last few years as the stigma associated with UAPs slowly wears off and as the government ramps up its efforts to address potential safety risks associated with unexplained objects in the sky.
