Police fired tear gas and fought with violent black-clad anarchists in Paris and across France on as hundreds of thousands of protesters marched against Mr Macron's plan to raise the pension age.
Some 457 people were arrests and 441 security forces were injured, ministers said on Friday morning.
The ninth day of nationwide protests, mostly peaceful, disrupted train and air travel. Teachers were among many professions to walk off the job, days after the government pushed through legislation to raise the retirement age by two years to 64.
Demonstrations in central Paris were generally peaceful, but groups of "Black Bloc" anarchists smashed shop windows, demolished street furniture and ransacked a McDonald's restaurant. Clashes ensued as riot police drove back the anarchists with tear gas and stun grenades.
"There are thugs, often from the far-Left, who want to bring down the state and kill police officers," Mr Darmanin said after visiting Paris police headquarters on Thursday night.
Small groups continued to clash with police in Paris late into the night, lighting fires throughout the city centre and playing cat-and-mouse with security forces.
Police had also fired tear gas at some protesters in several other cities, including Nantes, and Lorient in the west, and Lille in the north, and used water cannon against others in Rennes in the northwest.
Labour unions fear protests could turn more violent if the government does not heed mounting popular anger over pension curbs.
"This is a response to the falsehoods expressed by the president and his incomprehensible stubbornness" Marylise Leon, deputy secretary general of the CFDT union, said.
"The responsibility of this explosive situation lies not with the unions but with the government."
Unions called for regional action over the weekend and new nationwide strikes and protests on March 28, the day Britain's King Charles is due to travel to Bordeaux from Paris by train.
The main entrance of the Bordeaux town hall was set ablaze on Thursday, days before the monarch was due to walk through on his visit to the southwestern city.

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind Is A Rollercoaster of Emotion
When out-there director Michel Gondry and existential screenwriter Charlie Kaufman came together in 2004, the result was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The film features Jim Carrey as Joel Barish, a lonely man who becomes romantically involved with an outgoing woman named Clementine, played by Kate Winslet.
After their relationship turns sour, the two undergo a procedure to erase each other from their minds, but it’s not as easy as it seems. The result is a highly emotional film and an incredibly original take on storytelling, with Kaufman’s script taking home the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Unforgiven Turns The Western On Its Head
Clint Eastwood got his start in the Western genre. However, he was never any typical gunslinger. This is most evident in Unforgiven, a film he directed and starred in. The movie tells the story of a former outlaw played by Eastwood, who has given up on his old ways to raise his children.
However, in desperate need of money, he takes up one more contract, but it's more than he bargained for. It's a tale that Eastwood describes as showing the true ugliness of violence, not glorifying it like typical Western tropes. It provides the audience with a realistic experience of what it's like to kill and to die.
There Will Be Blood Shows The Darkness Within People
Director Paul Thomas Anderson brings the hunt for oil and greed for money in the late 19th century to life in his film There Will Be Blood. Starring the revered Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano, the two men battle for the control of oil, with Day-Lewis' character slowly but surely becoming more unhinged.
It's a commentary on the negative effects of capitalism on American society, and the depraved things greed can drive people to do. Day-Lewis' astonishing performance is perfectly backed by Robert Elswit's shooting and Anderson's screenplay, creating a film that looks and feels as black and grimy as oil.
There's A Far Deeper Meaning Behind John Wick
Starring Keanu Reeves, John Wick is a breathtaking action film that puts many others in the same category to shame. It's fast-paced and well-executed, with Reeves training for eight hours a day, five days a week, for four months. His dedication to the process is one of the reasons the film turned out so well.
While the lighting, special effects, and plot may be gripping, John Wick is more than a story about a former assassin on a killing spree after the passing of his dog. It's about a man in mourning who lost the only thing that connected him to his recently-deceased wife. It has an emotional depth that most action films go out of their way to avoid, making it especially impactful.
You Were Never Really Here Is Incredibly Dark And Different
You Were Never Really Here follows Joe, (Joaquin Phoenix) a hammer-wielding hitman hired by a senator to rescue his daughter from a sex trafficking ring. However, he soon discovers that he's fallen deep into a dangerous trap.
While the plot may not seem all that original, the way the characters are handled and how the film subverts expectations is what makes it stand out among the rest. Phoenix beautifully shows his character's suffering while simultaneously being a loving son and a ruthless killer. It's his ability to do so and the plot's unexpected turns that takes the film to new heights.
he Witch Revitalized The Horror Genre
Set in the 1630s, after being banished from their Puritan Plymouth community, a father and his family set off into the wilderness where they establish a farm on the edge of a vast forest. After their infant son mysteriously disappears, the family tears itself apart while simultaneously being manipulated by a supernatural force in the woods.
For his directorial debut, Robert Eggers spent four years researching for the film, making it as realistic and equally as horrifying as possible, right down to the dialogue. On top of the impending sense of doom that the film evokes, it wouldn't have been nearly as effective without the outstanding performances of the cast both young and old.
Manchester By The Sea Will Break Anyone's Heart
Manchester by the Sea isn't exactly the kind of film you watch for entertainment, or to walk away feeling talkative and satisfied. Written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, the film follows Lee Chandler, (Casey Affleck) who is forced to return to his hometown after the death of his brother.
Learning that he now has custody of his teenage nephew, he is also confronted with his past, an event that created a wound that will never heal. Rightfully, Affleck won an Oscar for his performance as did Lonergan for Best Original Screenplay. As amazing as it is, the film evokes emotions you never want to have to experience in real life.
Mad Max: Fury Road Pushes Action To Its Absolute Limits
Today, it's easy to become desensitized to CGI explosions and action sequences, but that's not the case with Mad Max: Fury Road. The fourth installment of the Mad Max franchise, the film follows Max Rockatansky, (Tom Hardy) a borderline feral human, living in a post-apocalyptic world. He finds himself in a heist with Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to save five women from the grips of an evil warlord, and chaos ensues.
Although the plot is enticing, it's the action and effects that make it a cut above. The majority of the stunts are real, as well are the out-of-this-world vehicles sweeping across the wasteland. Furthermore, the world-building is incredible with the cinematography making everything feel a little too real.
Mulholland Drive Was Named The Greatest Film Of The 21st Century
Since the early days of film, directors have been experimenting with surrealism, having been inspired by other forms of surrealism art. In Mulholland Drive, David Lynch perfectly executes how surrealism should be translated into film. The movie is comparable to a disturbing dream, blurring the lines between dreams and reality.
Film critic Robert Eggers commented that the film "Works directly on the emotions, like music." There are so many memorable scenes in the film that leave the audience glued to the screen, with BBC naming it the greatest film of the 21st century so far.
Her Depicts A Grim Future
Her is a science-fiction romance written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze. Set in the near future, the movie follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely writer going through a divorce. To combat his loneliness, he buys an operating system (Scarlet Johansson) who he ends up falling in love with. The beautiful use of pastel colors, smoggy cityscapes, and the film's score make the audience feel like they're right next to Twombly.
Joaquin's stunning performance allows the audience to sympathize with his character, simultaneously experiencing his highs and lows. The way society is portrayed almost hits a little too close to home, a picture of a world that doesn't seem too far from now.
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford Is More Like A Painting Than A Movie
Regarded as one of the most underrated films of the time, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a different approach to the Western genre. It takes its time, focusing more on the characters rather than typical Western gunfights.
With each frame being able to pass as a painting, the film follows the celebrity Jesse James (Brad Pitt) and his struggles with mental illness, and his relationship with an unstable fan (Casey Affleck). Cinematographer Roger Deakins even invented a series of new lenses to get the shots that he wanted with critics Scout Tafoya describing it as "somewhere between a tintype and an oil painting."

Holly Cole has been visiting Disney World since she was five years old and has always wanted to live nearby one day.
She finally took the plunge last year with her husband Cody after they'd experienced family conflict and wanted a new start.
The couple, both 29, left Nashville, Tennessee and moved more than 700 miles to Auburndale, Florida in December. They can now drive to the resort in less than an hour.
"We just wanted to leave Tennessee, but this is always where I wanted to end up," Holly Cole told Insider. "We've been here almost four months now and get to visit Disney around three times a week and we absolutely love it."
The Disney superfan says leaving Tennessee has saved their marriage and they get to go to the resort all the time with their two-year-old daughter Willow.
"A couple of days ago we went twice a day – we came home after going in the morning and then went back later for the fireworks. That's normal for us," Holly said.
The family has an annual season ticket called a Pixie Dust pass that costs $400 plus tax, which lets them visit whenever they want. The pass is only available for Florida residents and they opted out of water park access which costs more.
"At first I thought it was a scam because it was so cheap," Holly said. "Going to Disney before that has always been so expensive and would cost no less than $5,000 for the week, so once we set up our passes we were there the next day."
Holly says she's been a "huge" Disney fan since she was a child and she enjoys being able to create fun memories with her daughter, who is now well-known by some of the cast members.
The Navy veteran has a leg injury and says walking around the resort helps with her mobility as well as dealing with anxiety and depression. Now that she's no longer serving in the navy she said she can visit the resort any day of the week.
"I just have to go into the app and make a reservation, we can pretty much go whenever we want," Holly said. "My daughter will wake up and say 'mommy I want to see Mickey Mouse,' and we'll make a quick reservation and drive down."
NETFLIX fans are devastated after they found out that the show You has been slated to end.
But, the good news is fans of the show will get one more season, as it was renewed for Season Five.
The You Twitter page let fans know that there will only be one more season with Joe Goldberg.
"Goodbye... YOU. Joe Goldberg will return for the fifth and final season of YOU in 2024," they captioned the post.
They added a video to the post with Joe's iconic line of "Hello, You," being said over and over again, along with clips from the show.
The screen went black and ended with him saying: "Goodbye, You."
"The fifth and final season coming in 2024," the video read.
Penn Badgley is set to reprise his role of Joe, the serial killer who has gotten away with numerous murders.
The show is based on the book series by Caroline Kepnes.
Deadline reported that showrunners, Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, are stepping down, and will not led season five.

Sera is leaving to focus on other projects, but will remain on as an executive producer.
However, the Netflix series executive producers, Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, will now serve as co-showrunners.
Greg and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions told the publication that they "always intended on telling Joe's story in five seasons."
“Ever since our friends at Alloy shared Caroline Kepnes’ fantastic book, we have always conceived it as a five-season journey. We are excited to continue our relationship with Mike and Justin as they take over the reins as co-showrunners and prepare to bring Joe Goldberg home," they said.
You started out on Lifetime, after Netflix originally passed on it.
But, with low ratings on the cable channel, the streaming network picked it up and saw massive success.

"I’m crying literally like literal tears are building up in my eyes," wrote one fan.

That that, someone replied: "My life literally makes no sense anymore the second I am done with the fifth part."
"I will miss this show so much. Can’t wait to see the ending though, hope Joe gets what he deserves," said a sad fan.
"This is bittersweet. I'm glad there will be a new season, but I don't want it to end. I love this show!" commented a Twitter user.
Some fans though are happy to see it go, after what they called a "disastrous season four."
IS THAT YOU, JOE?
Season four was split up into two parts- four episodes airing in February and the last four in March.
After Joe fled suburbia to chase after his latest obsession, Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle), he changed his name and appearance.
The serial killer had gotten into a fight with his wife, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), and ultimately killed her in the end.
He dropped off their son, Henry, with a neighbor, and never looked back.
However, some fans were disappointed because the latest season did not follow the same structure as the three before it.
Joe, now Jonathan Moore, was a professor in England, and was trying to reinvent his life, all while seeking out Marienne.
He made a bunch of friends and even forgot about his latest pursual when he met Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie).
She introduced him to her friends, and they spent weekends together at Lady Phoebe's estate.
Jonathan seemed to have turned his life around, as he hadn't committed any murders, that he knew of, but Rhys Moore (Ed Speleers), the man running for Mayor, was threatening to expose his past.
When the show returned for part two in early March, it took a completely different turn.
Fans found out that Jonathan actually had Marienne trapped in a huge glass box, but he had no memory of it.
Rhys turned out to be a part of his imagination, although there was a real Rhys Moore, and unleashed the dark side within him again.
Jonathan couldn't remember that he had been the one who was killing all of the people around him, instead of thinking it was Rhys.
Marienne was freed by one of Jonathan's university students, who found her in the abandoned building.
She is the only of Joe's victim that has made it out alive, and vowed get her revenge on him.
In the end, Jonathan left London with Kate and they made a new life for themselves in America, after he tried to jump off a bridge.
He was back to Joe and had shaved his beard and cut his hair.
Although the darkness in him seemed to be at bay, the menacing look he gave the camera at the end, told a different story.
Fans will not have to wait too long to find out Joe's fate, as the final season will air in 2024.
In the new adaptation of Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the role of Daisy Jones is played by Riley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley.
"My whole family are musicians, so I certainly have a lot of experience around musicians," she told Entertainment Weekly about playing a singer. "I dated a few musicians. I've grown up with a lot of that in my life. So, I 'm very familiar with musicians, but I 'm also very not familiar with singing or playing guitar. Like at all."
Eagle-eyed viewers noticed a hidden tribute to Keough's grandfather Elvis in episode two of Daisy Jones: When Daisy takes the stage with Simone (Nabiyah Be) to perform "Two Against Three," her guitar strap looks identical to the one Elvis used in his '68 Comeback Special. The comparison was first noted by Deena Dietrich on Twitter, who blogs about Elvis.
The guitar is actually Keough's own—so there's a chance the strap could actually be her grandfather's guitar strap. "I do have a fun fact that Daisy's guitar is my guitar," she told BuzzFeed. "It was my personal guitar and I wanted to use it in the show."
And, Keough's scene parter, Nabyiah Be, who plays Simone, also comes from a legendary music family: Her father is reggae star Jimmy Cliff, who shot to fame in The Harder They Come, a 1972 Jamaican film.
The guitar strap is a distinct pattern often called the the Hendrix Woodstock strap, because Jimi Hendrix used it to perform at Woodstock in 1969. When that strap was auctioned in 2008, it was described as follows (via Guitar World): "This patterned Ace guitar strap was used by Hendrix at Woodstock as well as the Hollywood Bowl in 1967 and other performances. Airing on Paramount+, the show follows a similar format to the hit show The Bachelor.
Although The Sun has covered their modesty, TV viewers will be treated to an unpixellated full-frontal show.

Go on a safari at Kaudulla National Park to see elephants in the wild.
Even though I spent a short amount of time in Sri Lanka, I travelled to extraordinary sites that really left me wanting more. I witnessed historical marvels like Sigiriya Rock and Dambulla Temple, and climbed natural wonders like Pidurangala Rock.
Sri Lanka is also home to Asian elephants. I’d never seen an elephant in the wild before. Although I visited the Elephant Orphanage and embarked on daily safaris while volunteering in Kenya, I’d never witnessed these beautiful creatures in their natural environment.
You can visit Kaudulla National Park to see elephants on a Sri Lankan safari, and that’s exactly what I did.
OUR JEEP SAFARI
Our excursion to Kaudulla National Park was completely arranged through our stay at Mahagedara Wellness Retreat. If you’re not staying at Mahagedara, you can arrange a tour through many local companies. We travelled there in an open-air jeep so we could stand up and get the full view of our surroundings.
